Church History
Cross Memorial Baptist Church was organized on October 12, 1947 by a council made up of Rev. Luther Snipes, Rev. R.F. Mayberry, Rev. Fred Forrester, Rev. Ed Miller, Grover Bailey, Ernest Poteat, Russell Shuping, and Joe Causby. They met in a tent on Grant Dale Hill, named the church and adopted a church covenant. The first officers were Rev. Ed Miller, Pastor; Carrie Duckworth, Clerk; and Conley Brittain, Sunday School Superintendent.
November 16, 1947 the church purchased a house from Mrs. F.P. Brittain for $2,000.00, and the following Sunday began services in this house. The following year, August 1948, they obtained a lot from Mr. Will Morgan and built a sanctuary. Final payment was made on the sanctuary in August of 1951, and in September they voted to build Sunday School rooms onto the back.
On July 17, 1955 ground-breaking services were held for a new educational building, and in August of that year the church bought land from Bill Shuping to build its first parsonage. The church moved into its new educational building on December 18, 1955 and began a departmental Sunday School program.
In 1967 the church purchased a half-acre of land behind the existing building, and voted to purchase land from Rev. Cole on which to build a new parsonage. It was completed in 1969. An acre of land adjacent to the parking lot was purchased in 1975 for $7,000.00 which later became the site of the new Felllowship Hall.
In the fall of 1983, the first meal was served in the new Fellowship Hall.
Ground-breaking for the new sanctuary was in May of 1984, and it was dedicated on January 6, 1987, celebrating paying off the construction of the Fellowship Hall and the sanctuary.
Soon after Cross Memorial was organized, missions work began. In October 1952 the church sent $20.00 to State Missions. In 1960 a constitution and by-laws were adopted giving at least ten percent of its income to the Cooperative Program.
God has, and continues to, richly bless Cross Memorial Baptist Church, and all the praise, honor and glory belongs to Him.
